From her early training under K.N.Dandayuthapani Pillai and later under K.J.Sarasa, of the famous Vazhuvoor school, Urmila received special training in abhinaya under the tutelage of Dance veteran Kalanidhi Narayanan. Urmila is an artiste of the modern genre and combines elegance and rigour both into conventional formats as well as new thematic expositions. A globetrotter, Urmila is the recipient of many prestigious awards. She received the prestigious Nrithya Choodamani award from Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai, India. Urmila is actively engaged in imparting training to aspiring students through her institution Natya Sankalpaa.
