Rama Sundar is an author by profession and belongs to a South Indian family of professional musicians. Even though she spent ten years training in Carnatic music, she was always drawn towards Hindustani Classical music.
She had learnt Carnatic vocal from her mother who was a student of Maharajapuram Santhanam. After a gap of many years, she went back to music, this time to Hindustani Classical. Under Smt. Shanti Sharma, she started from the basics and chose a traditional style with emphasis on clarity of swaras and to sing with "thairaav".
