Guru Kallidaikurichi S Sivakumar took his initial training from Guru Vaitheeswarankoil Vaidyanathan from the age of 7 and gave his first concert at the age of 14. Later he underwent intensive training from illustrious Gurus, Sangeetha Kalanidhi, Padmashri Sri Palghat Raghu for over 10 years (1987-97). During this decade he blossomed and matured as a Mridangam artiste, focusing on how to accompany the Carnatic Keerthanais (songs) with rich dexterity, which is the hallmark of his Guru’s traditions.
Guru Sivakumar is an A Grade Mridangam artiste in All India Radio and Doordarshan (India), and has 37 years of experience in playing in concerts.
He has received several awards and the notable ones are: Best Mridangam Artist Award from The Music Academy (Chennai) for two consecutive years 1991 and 1992, Award of Naada Oli From Naadha Inbam in 2003, Palani Subramania Pillai Award from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha (Chennai), Guru Karaikudi Mani Best Mridangam Artiste Award in 2010.
Travelling widely within India and abroad as a regular concert artiste, he has accompanied many illustrious, eminent and iconic, yesteryears and present-day musicians, including: Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, K. V. Narayanaswamy, T. N. Seshagopalan, Neyveli Santhanagopalan, Vedavalli, Malladi Brothers, Vijay Siva, Sikkil Sisters, Hyderabad Brothers, Sowmya, Nithysri, Unnikrishnan.
Guru Sivakumar has been teaching budding Mridangam students for over 20 years, both in India and abroad. Several of his students are now concert performers.
